Hello, and welcome!
We are Anna & David, the proud creators of Alive Foods.
We are passionate about health, wellbeing, education, happiness and creativity. And, of course, FOOD! We want to share with you food that is organic, fermented, traditional, ethical and delicious!
Why We Do What We Do
We love life. We love food. And we love feeling healthy and full of energy. Everybody has their own unique way to get to their state of health and happiness.
Unfortunately it seems a lot of people are getting lost. Technology overload, lack of connection with our bodies, and stressful lives can make it a huge challenge to return to our state of balance.
We know how hard it is. And we want to help inspire, inform, educate, share, motivate YOU to take a step in the direction of your healing. Fermented foods and their incredibly powerful healing properties can make a huge difference in your digestive health. And your gut health is probably the most important part of a healthy, happy body.
We’d love to help you on your way!
Who We Are…
I grew up in one of the sauerkraut countries of the world – Germany – but funnily enough, I never ate sauerkraut until I came to Australia. My mum remembers going to the local butcher as a child and buying sauerkraut straight from the barrel, and then eating the entire purchase on the way home as she loved it so much! She never thought to continue this custom, as traditional sauerkraut was hard to find by the time I was born. How I wish I had been raised on sauerkraut!
From a young age, I had the travel bug, dreaming of places far from the serious culture of Germany… somewhere I could be creative and have fun!
So it came as no surprise to my family when, at the age of 19, I announced that I was moving to Australia, and that was that.
My professional journey took me on many different adventures: remedial massage therapist, spa manager, pilates teacher, apprentice chef, and caterer for retreats and fancy weddings. It’s always been hard for me to stick with one ‘thing’ as I’m always so curious about different ways of life. Though I was ‘good’ at these jobs, something was missing – my heart wasn’t 100% committed.
Nevertheless, I was happily enjoying my life in Byron when I met David, a very handsome Frenchman with an irresistible charm. I knew he was something special and he must have felt the same way about me because 2 years later we were married and living our dream together.
However, there was always one problem I couldn’t solve: my health. Starting with a bad stomach bug I attracted in Indonesia in my early 20s, my health was on a downward spiral. I lost count of all the practitioners I saw, all the tests I did, and all the supplements and diets I tried. Nothing helped. Bad digestive problems, chronic infections, low immunity, depression and anxiety made my life a living hell with no light at the end of the tunnel. I can tell you – it’s hard to stay hopeful when your health prevents you from fully participating in life, from going out for dinner or parties, or socialising through sports and other activities. It is easy to feel isolated and lonely. I had many dark days on this journey of struggling with my symptoms.
One day I came across a book that emphasised the necessity of fermented foods as a regular part of a healthy diet.
I started buying some sauerkraut at the local market and fell in love with the flavour! Not long after my discovery, my health started to improve, especially my digestion.
When we had the chance to start our own business creating fermented foods, we knew this was our chance to start bringing the incredible health benefits of fermented foods to the masses. If it worked for me, surely it could hold benefits for others also!
I love sharing my experience and knowledge through retreats, workshops and our market stall. We get so much incredible feedback of how fermented foods have changed the lives of so many.
I was born and raised in a beautiful area in the south of France, very close to the Mediterranean Sea. Both of my parents are from Portugal, which means my upbringing was influenced by both French and Portuguese cultures.
Loving sports and outdoor activities, I have always had a healthy appetite! My childhood years were spent between school, sports and my parents’ delicatessen. During the week at school, I’d learn reading, writing and counting, while at my parents’ shop, I’d learn about vegetables, fruits, cheeses – as well as how to be a salesman! It was my family’s passion – we were very lucky to have fresh, local produce and homemade dishes every day. No junk or fast food allowed! My parents were creative cooks, and we enjoyed many delicious meals together. This has instilled in me a lifelong love of fresh, good quality food.
After my studies in commerce/management, I was curious to discover new countries and cultures, and my love for surfing pushed me to come to Australia the ‘little adventure’ that changed my life!
It’s been now five beautiful years of living in Byron Bay, and two years married to the beautiful girl with lots of greens in her basket!
Anna and I met at the Farmers’ Market, where I had been working, selling amazing tomatoes and quality vegetables from Coopers Shoot, in the hills near Byron Bay. I have learned so much about farming and marketing while working with Hugh and Heather Armstrong (from the tomato farm), and became very inspired to create something with my knowledge about food – especially healthy, organic and nutritious ingredients. Through research and patience, Anna became a real encyclopaedia of healthy food and clean living, and I discovered so many ‘new’ products – like green smoothies, chia seeds and even fermented foods – from her. Though I still know more about cheese!
Though it took me a while to get used to these new flavours, I’m now addicted to the taste of fermented foods. Since creating our business about a year ago, Anna and I have been bringing the benefits of fermented foods to people’s lives, and so far the response has been amazing! Lots of people have been showing more interest in how fermented foods can improve their well-being, and Anna and I are very proud to say that many people are enjoying our delicious creations and commenting on the beautiful flavours we bring.
I am so happy to know that Alive Foods is helping so many people feel better every day.
