Why are they called tigernuts?
As you know they are not nuts but tubers. They simply got the nickname ‘Tigernuts’ due to the faint stripes you can see on their skins.
Why are they peeled?
Unpeeled, tigernuts have a tough skin around them which makes them impossible to chew without soaking in water first. Buying them peeled means you can enjoy them straight out of the pack!
Can I eat tigernuts although I have a nut allergy?
Yes! Tigernuts are a vegetable, not a nut!
Are they Faitrade?
Yes. Our tigers are grown in Niger, Africa and then processed in Spain. We are proud to support fairtrade farming practices.
What can you use them for?
What can you not use them for?!? The list is endless: Replace flour 1:1 in cakes, muffins, cookies, brownies, bread & crackers
Make delicious sweet milk, add to smoothies, make nut butter, eat by themselves, add to muesli. Check our recipe page for some ideas.
Why are they good for your gut?
Tigernuts are high in resistant starch- a type of fibre which feeds the good bacteria in your gut to improve digestion. Read more here for their amazing gut healing properties.
Are they organic?
Yes our tigernuts are certified organic by the European Regulation body.
Some of my baked goods made with tigernut flour taste a little grainy? Is that normal?
Due to the very high fibre content of tigernuts, the texture of the flourcan be a little grainy/sandy. When baking we recommend mixing the tigernut flour with other flours such as nut or coconut flour. Personally, we don’t mind the texture as we know we’re getting some amazing benefits from it!
Can you eat too many tigernuts?
Us humans tend to eat a lot of what is labeled ‘healthy’ and ‘superfood’- the more the better, right? Well, no. As with every food, start in small quantities to see how your body reacts; especially your gut. As tigernuts are high in fibre and a prebiotic food, they can alter your gut flora. Ease into eating them and when if you find your body tolerates them well you can increase the dosage.
