This one is different because…you’re ready?? It’s not a nut! Also known as Chufa or Earth Almond, this little gem is actually a starchy tuber, a vegetable (grown underground a bit like sweet potato) & it has been hugely overlooked as a true super food! Packed with nutrients, tigernuts are a great source of prebiotic fiber & the healthiest alternative to wheat & nut flours.

Tigernuts are nothing new though. They have been around for thousands, if not millions of years. In fact a recent Oxford Study suggests that tigernuts made up about 80% of our early human ancestors diet 2 million years ago! (1)
Eaten by Paleo-Indians more than 9,000 years ago and cultivated in ancient Egypt about 6,000 years ago, chufas were already recognised for their incredible health benefits long before we re- discovered them. (2) You could say that tigernuts were possibly one of the worlds’ first true superfods!
FARMING & PROCESSING
Originally from Africa, today Tigernuts are grown all over the world, mainly in the tropics & Mediterranean. We import our chufas from an organically certified company in Spain who source their tigernuts from a fairtrade farm in Niger, Africa.
After harvesting, the tigernuts are porcessed in Spain. There, they are sun dried for 3 months which develops their sweet flavour & ensures they stay fresh and nutritious for the arrival on your plate.

What’s resistant starch?
We all know by now that gut health is among the most important factors to overall health. How do we ensure growing & maintaining a healthy microbiome & support our good bacteria? With the right food- Resistant starch as one of them. As luck will have it tigernuts are the highest source of resistant starch!
RS is a form of prebiotic fibre which is indigestible to us and therefore isn’t broken down in the stomach or small intestine. It reaches the colon intact and feeds the good bacteria. These produce certain short-chain fatty acids which have been proven to help reduce the risk of cancer, reduce inflammation and help prevent leaky gut.
Furthermore, as it ‘resists’ digestion it means that resistant starch does not raise blood glucose or insulin levels after consuming it. On the contrary, RS has been found to reduce blood glucose levels and improve insulin sensitivity and is therefore suitable for diabetics.(3)
